Why does astrology remain meaningful for many people?

Astrology remains meaningful because it connects personal life with a bigger symbolic system. People often like it because it makes their experiences feel connected, patterned, and easier to understand.

This paper tested three common explanations for belief in astrology against British survey data from 1988: that it attracts people with only partial scientific knowledge, that it reflects a "metaphysical unrest" in people who are spiritual but not part of organised religion, and that it goes with an authoritarian personality.

The data supported versions of the first two explanations, but not the third. The authors concluded that serious interest in astrology is not mainly a result of lacking scientific understanding. It works more like a compensating activity for people whose social world is unsettled or in transition.

What this does and doesn't show

It explains who believed in astrology in one country at one time, and why. The survey is from 1988, so today's patterns may differ; for a recent picture see how people use astrology today.
